You can't add new postings which are dated earlier than a balance assignment, currently. If you try to add a new posting which is dated earlier than a balance assignment in that account and commodity, it will be rejected.
It's because balance assignments are performed once, before `add`; It's because by the time `add` runs, all balance assignments have been processed and have become assertions.
by the time `add` runs, all amounts in the journal are explicit, and assignments have become assertions. So if you need to do this, add the `-I` flag to disable assertions temporarily.
